# Market Reports

We provide monthly product reports for the Casual, Core, and Casino Markets

Liquid & Grit’s monthly market reports analyze revenue-driving trends in top-grossing mobile gaming apps in the casual, core, and casino markets, and a report on slots designs. These monthly reports provide an overview of the most important mechanics, soft-launches, breakout apps, features, and innovations released that month.

## Summary of Product Reports

Our market reports are divided into three main sections:

1. The **Impact Drivers** analyze releases that drove revenue in top grossing apps. In this section, you'll find revenue analysis of that app, average revenue impact of those types of mechanics, a teardown of the feature, and actionable insights on how to successfully design and release new mechanics.
2. The **Trends and Impacts** section contains information on how these release trends have changed over time within markets, genres, and apps to identify areas of opportunity. This information comes directly from our Database tool, which you can also have access to for additional trend insights.
3. The **Market Watch** provides an overview of soft-launch and breakout apps and notable features, events, and content releases within top-grossing apps to help you stay on top of the latest innovations.

{% hint style="info" %}
We currently track over 170 apps across the casual, core, and casino markets, covering either all of the apps that make up 80% of the revenue of a sub-genre or a minimum of two apps, whichever is bigger. Check out the [Apps Covered](/information-by-product/market-reports/apps-covered) section for details.

# Database Tool

Information on Liquid & Grit's Database tool in the Impact Portal

## Overview

The Database tool holds over 34K screenshot and gameplay video libraries of every new release of the top-grossing mobile games. It also allows you to export the data (or extract it with an API), set up notifications, and check out feature matrixes. The export functionality will not be available during the trial period.

This tool is heavily used by designers, product managers writing specs, product owners tracking competitors, or insights teams wanting additional coverage.

## Database Tool

The [Database](https://my.liquidandgrit.com/library/gallery) contains over 34K filterable and searchable screenshot and gameplay video libraries. Each library holds images and often videos of that release.

{% embed url="<https://www.loom.com/share/1e5a9cfa89e64680a109d06a5c8ea9d9>" %}
An overview of the Database Tool

### Database tabs

**The Data tab**

The Data tab allows you to export the data into .csv file to uncover your own trends, examine your competitors, or find other insights based on how the top grossing apps are investing their resources.

Each library is tagged with specific information, like the mechanic, reward system, dynamics, reward types, and more.

#### The Gallery tab

The Gallery tab allows you to view screenshots and video content of game features, mechanics, events, etc. Each entry contains its own gallery.

#### The Matrix tab

The Matrix tab allows you to quickly conduct a GAP analysis of your market or a potential market to see what features are most popular.

#### My Notifications

You can set up notifications with any parameter so that you receive emails whenever there is a new release that you're most concerned with (e.g. a particular market, app, mechanic, etc.)

### Database Use Cases

#### Finding Product Examples

Let's say you’d like to build a Banks feature for a Puzzle game and would like to show examples to your design team.

To view examples, filter by clicking “Casual”, “Puzzle”, “Features”, and “Banks”. You can then filter on specific apps or other parameters to narrow down your search or click into a library, like Roxy's Reserve from Lily's Garden.

All the Bank features in Puzzle

#### Tracking Competitors

If you want to know when a competitor has released a new event, feature, or content, you can simply search of that competitor (e.g. Angry Birds 2) and click "Add Filter Notification" to create that filter.

Now whenever Angry Birds 2 releases anything, you will receive an email on Monday notifying you of that release with more information available in the Design Portal.

You can also download the data into .csv to do your own analysis on a market, genre, subgenre, app, and more. This data is very powerful when paired with revenue data.

The Tracker tool allows you to compare your app's live ops data against competitors, such as trends, patterns, and successful events. All the information is exportable into a .csv file for more analysis and clicking on all of the links will take you to images and screenshots of that feature.

**Content Planning and Scheduling**

The Tracker tool can help you plan and schedule your app's events and feature releases.

By reviewing the live ops calendar data, you can identify potential conflicts and strategically plan your app's events based on insights from the event calendar, ensuring a well-timed and impactful release.

# Lift Tool

Information on the Lift Tool in Liquid and Grit's Impact Portal.

## Lift Tool

The Lift tool will give you revenue impact numbers by mechanics and individual product releases. It does this by first combining our data with revenue providers—such as Data.ai, Sensor Tower, and App Magic—and then doing daily calculations on the revenue lift of each product release.

The two main views in the Lift tool are by individual product release and by aggregated mechanic.

## Revenue Impact Options

### By **Individual Product Release**

One view gives you the revenue impact by both week over week and month over month numbers for individual product releases. You can then easily filter the product releases by a type, such as challenge events (as shown below). You can also easily filter by app, market, genre, date, and more.

You will also be able to find out more information about that product release by clicking on the name and going directly to its screenshot library.

### **By Aggregated Mechanic**

To understand the average and median revenue impact by a mechanic, such as challenge events in the casual market, you can view the data by aggregated mechanic. You will see the count, average and median revenue impact, and the standard deviation of the revenue impact for each mechanic.

{% hint style="info" %}
The standard deviation can represent the risk of a mechanic in the market. So although the average revenue impact might be high, the standard deviation might also be high. Both of these numbers are important tools to help inform your product roadmap.
{% endhint %}

### **Data Source**

The data source will come from our New Releases Database as well as your API key and your revenue data provider (such as Data.ai, Sensor Tower, App Magic, etc.). Through your Admin panel, you will be able to connect your API key information to pull in your preferred revenue data to be combined with our data.

### **Lift Tool Use Cases**

**Benchmarking Performance Against Competitors**

With the Lift Tool, you can compare your app's revenue impact metrics against competitors to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Allowing you to benchmark performance, identify market trends, and adjust monetization strategies accordingly.

All the information is exportable into a .csv file for more analysis.

**Comparing Revenue Impact Across Different Versions**

The Lift tool can also provide revenue impact numbers across different versions of a product. This enables you to compare the impact of different updates or releases, identify trends and patterns, and iterate based on data insights.

For example, suppose you'd like to compare impact metrics between multiple battle pass seasons. In that case, you can navigate to the screenshot library of the release within our [Database](/information-by-product/impact-portal/database-tool) tool.

From there, you can quickly find more Lift information between the different seasons.

# Economy Teardown - Case

Custom work projects for specific clients interested in insights on game economies

## Summary

One of the largest mobile gaming companies wanted to understand the game economies of top-grossing casual titles.

Specifically, our client wanted to know:

* The rate players gain access to new game content
* The reward value (in dollars) players earn from various sources
* How quickly players grow their in game real estate
* The session length and biggest impacts to session length

Liquid and Grit derived analysis from three player types and over two weeks of daily game data collection.

## Methodology and Breakdown

Our insights team implemented and analyzed classifications of player types over two weeks, with 60-90 minutes of play per day. Players were segmented into classes based on player-spend behavior.

We investigated player progress, engagement with features, expansion of in-game real estate, and session length in detail, each along several measures, and interpreted the data in terms of dollar-value received.

## Deliverables

We compiled all of these findings in a comprehensive report along with several spreadsheets containing the entirety of the exhaustive investigation.

The final analysis included graphs, summaries, and insights in a Google Spreadsheet.

## Process

The project is first outlined in a Google Document so that the developer and Liquid and Grit have a clear understanding of the goals, final outcome, and information to be delivered.

All of our custom work is then tracked in a shared Dropbox paper document, with all parties having access if desired. You can see exactly how the project is progressing and make suggestions and comments directly in our documents where necessary. With the scope determined ahead of time to your specific project specifications, Liquid and Grit’s team of analysts can generally prepare a market report like this one every three months for your organization.

# Support Analysis - Case

Actionable insights in gamer support

## Summary

A client wanted to determine the quality of their top-grossing game’s customer support system. Including the client's game, we analyzed five games within the game's sub-genre, compiled data across 49 categories, and then generated scores in reliability, human interaction, competence, reaction to criticism, and store refunds.

While their game enjoyed status as a top 5 grossing RPG app, our analysis found that the game's customer support was in need of serious improvement. In particular, we discovered that extensive use of auto-reply and wait times left players feeling undervalued as customers. For this game specifically, players found lack of personal human interaction prohibitive to their ability to receive the level of support they needed.

## Methodology

Eight player accounts were created for each game. Each player played 30 minutes per day for one week before contacting support. Players continued play and interacted with support for four weeks.

In total, 100 customer support requests were submitted. Players completed a 49-item survey for each customer support request. The survey examined the player’s overall satisfaction with each customer support interaction on a 7-point Likert scale (1-3 for dissatisfied, 4 neutral, and 5-7 for positive).

From the survey data, our team generated scores in five categories: reliability, personal touch, competence, reaction to criticism, and store refund.

Analysts added to the survey data by providing long-form notes evaluating their experiences. These included suggestions for improvements.

## Deliverables

We compiled all of these findings in a comprehensive document along with several spreadsheets containing the entirety of the investigation, including all tracking and analysis. Liquid and Grit formally presented the findings to allow for discussion of the methodology and results.

## Process

The project is first outlined in a Google Document so that the developer and Liquid and Grit have a clear understanding of the goals, final outcome, and information that will be delivered each quarter.

## Estimate Costs

With your organization’s specific needs established, Liquid and Grit will supply a cost estimate based on time to research, analyze, and process deliverables, as well as the specific combination of analysts, lead analysts, managers, and partners required to complete your request.

# Scorecard

Information on Liquid and Grit's product Scorecard tool

## Overview

The **Scorecard** tool helps subscribers self-check the health of an app or set of apps tracked by Liquid and Grit.

The Scoring Guide shows you how to determine an app’s health, from the player’s perspective, by examining select characteristics of different release types using data pulled from our Impact Portal. Characteristic data results are then converted into a score. Scorecard results can be used to compare against other apps within the same market or to track changes to an app's health over time.

This product is currently only available for apps within the casino market (bingo, casual casino, poker/cards, and slots).

To request a scorecard for non-casino markets/genres or for any questions regarding the scoring process, reach out to us at <support@liquidandgrit.com>.

### Our Name

In an interview, Steve Jobs was asked about his personal beliefs regarding great product development. He answered with a parable about a rock tumbler:

“\[We took] some regular old ugly rocks and we put them in the can with a little bit of **liquid** **and** **grit** powder, and we closed the can up. And he turned this motor on and he said, come back tomorrow.

And, I came back the next day, and we opened the can. And we took out these amazingly beautiful polished rocks. The same common stones that had gone in through rubbing against each other like this (clapping his hands), creating a little bit of friction, creating a little bit of noise, had come out beautiful.”

Our mission is to provide the liquid and grit powder for your product development process, hence our name—Liquid & Grit.

### Our Founder

Meet Brett Nowak, CEO and Founder

"Back in 2015, I started Liquid & Grit. I was director of product at Blue Shell Games and prior to that the product manager on *Zynga Poker*. I was putting out fires, writing specs, doing analysis, dealing with personalities, and everything else that went with managing a top-grossing mobile game. I was also downloading all the competitors' games and playing them, looking at their revenue numbers, and trying to figure out what the next revenue-driving feature would be. I needed to know who was going to be my next big competitor in the market, what apps were getting released that I should know about in other genres, and everything else that goes into formulating competitive intelligence. I felt like if I had that problem, then probably some other people I knew had that problem too."

Brett Nowak attended Harvard University and the Tuck School of Business.

# L\&G vs. Game Refinery

A summary comparing our company to Game Refinery's

## Summary

GameRefinery (GR) and Liquid and Grit (L\&G) are more complimentary than competitors, so many companies (with the means) subscribe to both services.

In short, GR is best at helping to identify new game opportunities by combining revenue and download data with app tagging information. If this is a technique that you believe will find new hybrid games, then GR is a solid solution for you.

L\&G, on the other hand, is best at supplying you with information, tools, and insights to optimize your live games. This includes monthly market reports, in depth analysis reports, revenue impact estimates, feature trends, breakout and soft launch app launches, a screenshot library, and more. L\&G also has a custom reporting team that can do analysis on almost anything, but this is not part of our subscription offerings and is priced on a per-project basis.

## Comparison Table

Product Goal

Liquid and Grit

Game Refinery

Comments

New App Opportunities Analysis

In our monthly reports, we analyze soft launched and breakout apps in each market. These teardowns include innovative features and callouts that drive revenue.

However, outside of our subscription service, we also offer custom solutions that are incredibly in-depth analysis of any newly launched game.

More information about our custom work projects can be found here.

Using their own market intelligence tool, GR mixes and matches app genres to help you look for potential revenue opportunities.

If you want personalized and detailed analysis of how your app may succeed or fail in the market, L&G's custom work is likely the best option. This is, however, further along in the process.

LiveOps Optimizations

This is our bread and butter. We track every game daily to provide you with data, tools, and research to optimize your games.

With our tools, you can see live ops calendars, new releases, and screenshots and videos of everything released in the market.

Then, we identify the most impactful events and features in the market and do teardowns.

GR provides general release data mostly focused on features and mechanics (based on app releases and not actual daily tracking). They provide screenshots and updates on thousands of games. They measure games across 260 different metrics to provide their users the broadest scope available to the game.

While GR pulls ahead of us on the number of mechanics and metrics that they track, they give mostly generalized information.

This is L&G's total focus and something we shine compared to GR. As a reporting company, we focus on all the details that impact the market and teardown why they are successful, not just tell you what is successful.

Market Tracking

L&G provides monthly reports that include impact drivers, trends, new app launches, breakout apps, events, and notable content features from that month.

We also provide you with a notification system so you can track specific apps.

L&G focuses on the top grossing games in each market.

GR tracks app releases for thousands of games.
